Important Health Info for Small Breed Dogs
READ BELOW TO LEARN HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PLUSH PUP

THINGS
We all know having a new puppy is exciting but we also have to make sure we provide the best care and nutrition for it to thrive. Small-breed dogs in particular can go through different types of stress when they enter their new homes so it's very important to know when signs of stress come about. Hypoglycemia is very common in small-breed dogs its when they experience low blood sugar levels.

TO
Hypoglycemia may occur after exercise, periods of excitement, or after missing a meal. If your new puppy shows any of these signs, please call us and treat them right away! For a hypoglycemic puppy, we need to immediately raise its blood sugar levels by orally administering glucose or sugar in any form. Our go-to sugar source is FortiCal, NutriCal, or Corn Syrup. Most small-breed puppies outgrow the tendency to have hypoglycemic reactions, but it’s important to control an affected puppy’s blood sugar while it's young because untreated hypoglycemia usually results in death and is the most common killer of small-breed puppies.

KNOW
Young puppies do not have the energy stores developed that adults have, which allow them to maintain adequate blood glucose (BG) in times of fasting or stress (such as going to a new home). The physical signs of hypoglycemia include weakness, lethargy, poor appetite, twitching, weakness, collapse, tremors, seizures, and if left untreated, hypoglycemia can become fatal.

Equally important is playtime! Regular exercise and interactive play keep your pup physically fit, mentally stimulated, and emotionally balanced. It also strengthens the bond between you and your furry friend.
